Every assumption behind the cost calculator — including what it leaves out.

The cost calculator and the “What it actually costs” figures on this site are built from real lean-startup numbers for opening a driver-training school in Ohio — not national averages or inflated estimates. This page shows exactly how they're calculated and, just as importantly, what they leave out.
Background check ($65), OTSO application ($250), office security deposit ($1,000), business filing ($99), classroom tables & chairs ($420), projector/TV ($300), and misc. office supplies ($200). Each vehicle adds $1,340 — a $1,090 dual-control conversion and $250 in graphics. Optional scheduling software adds a $900 setup. Any vehicle down payment you enter is added on top.
Office rent ($1,000), surety bond ($300/year), business liability insurance ($1,000/year), and domain/web ($25/year). Each vehicle adds $250/month insurance ($3,000/year). Any vehicle loan or lease payment you enter is added, along with your training-manager choice.
A licensed training manager is legally required to operate. Qualifying independently or hiring one runs roughly $20,000/year — a flat monthly cost. Drivers Ed Partners provides this for $20/student with no fixed monthly cost. Drivers Ed Partners is our affiliated service; see the disclosure.
The Ohio defaults assume net profit of about $214–$292 per student as an owner-operator, or $100–$117 with a hired instructor. That is tuition minus per-student variable costs (fuel, vehicle wear, payment processing, and the instructor's share when hired). Breakeven = total monthly fixed cost ÷ profit per student. You can override the profit figure with your own tuition-based number in the calculator.
The calculator lets you add many of these under “Adjust the numbers” so you can build a projection that fits your own situation and state.
These are planning estimates, not a guarantee. Confirm your own state's requirements and get real quotes before committing. Nothing here is legal or financial advice — see our terms.
