What It Actually Costs

Real Ohio startup numbers, adjusted for your situation. Change the inputs on the left and watch the numbers on the right update.

Each additional vehicle needs its own dual-control modification, graphics, and insurance.

Important: the baseline assumes you already own a suitable vehicle. It includes the dual-control conversion, graphics, and insurance — but not the cost of buying, leasing, or financing the car itself. If you need to acquire one, add your down payment and monthly payment under “Adjust the numbers” below.

How we calculated this
  • Where the numbers come from. The defaults are real lean-startup figures from opening driver-training schools in Ohio — not national averages or inflated estimates. Your state, city, and choices will move them, which is exactly why the key inputs are editable.
  • One-time “Total to Open” = background check ($65), OTSO application ($250), office security deposit ($1,000), business filing ($99), classroom tables & chairs ($420), projector/TV ($300), misc. office ($200), plus $1,340 per vehicle for dual-control conversion ($1,090) and graphics ($250), plus optional software setup ($900) and any vehicle down payment you enter.
  • Monthly fixed costs = office rent ($1,000), surety bond ($300/yr), business liability insurance ($1,000/yr), domain/web ($25/yr), plus $250/mo per vehicle insurance ($3,000/yr), any vehicle loan/lease you enter, and the training-manager cost you select.
  • Training manager. A licensed training manager is required to operate. Independent qualification runs roughly $20,000/year (a flat monthly cost); Drivers Ed Partners is billed at $20/student with no fixed monthly cost. See the disclosure above.
  • Profit per student & breakeven. The Ohio defaults assume a net profit of roughly $214–$292 per student as an owner-operator, or $100–$117 with a hired instructor — that’s tuition minus the per-student variable costs (fuel, wear, payment processing, and instructor share when hired). Breakeven = total monthly fixed cost ÷ profit per student. Enter your own tuition-based profit figure to override the range.
  • What’s not included. Vehicle purchase/financing (unless you add it), marketing, fuel, utilities, phone, accounting, payment-processing fees, and state-specific fees beyond those listed. Add them under “Adjust the numbers” for a fuller picture.
